(contact us for more tips like these if you plan to drive in cairo). sadly we didnt retain the enthusiasm to chat with the locals, as almost everybody turned out to be a tout, keen to drag us to his perfume/papyrus/souvenir shop and land us a bargain. we made up by spending time with our egyptian friend yasmine, who was introduced to us by anupama It seems the town had something against us from the start. we took more than an hour to find our hostel, and had to climb three flights of stairs with all our luggage...the least of our worries as it will emerge.

we parked our car in the hostel car park, and went in search of food. luckily we found this really good indian place serving authentic north indian food (and we're not just saying this because we were deprived of indian food for over 10days). the head waiter 'harry' (harpreet), was very friendly and excited enough about our trip to tell all the customers about it. we promised to return the next day and went to bed with the taste of homeland in our mouths and a good feeling inside our hearts, believing that the town was not against us after all.

only to wake up the next morning to find the right rear window of our car broken, with several of our valuables taken. of course the only night we leave the ipod and camera lenses in the car, it gets burgled! we're still kicking ourselves for it and yes, we'll be extra careful in the future.

for now we're left with listening to local radio (which can be interesting sometimes) and are welcome to any innovative ides for car games/ways to do timepass while driving (no we dont want to play antakshari).

anyway, we took all the necessary steps, especially photographing the crime scene, including shots by expert csi, aryabhat, of blood stains left behind by the burglar/s. there was also a lighter left behind, which we're keeping as a souvenir. the swedish police were quite friendly but even they couldnt help find a car glass service on saturday of the easter weekend. so we had a very helpful shell employee stick plastic sheet over the window instead and headed for denmark. <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052288269076503282" style="FLOAT: right;

we went for the interview with some trepidation.... but the senior official was very cordial and excited about our trip. he was concerned that we were going a bit too bravely through baluchistan, and worried for our safety. he also felt that our choice of car was not appropriate for the rough terrain awaiting us.

Poland. our Iran visa will be made available in Turkey, thanks to a very enterprising travel agent. for Czech republic, we are using 5 day transit permission available to all neighbouring countries' visa holders. our Schengen visa appointment with Norway embassy is on the 19th of March! yeah....we know its a bit too close, but thats the earliest we could get. lets hope they dont delay in issuing the visa. that leaves out Pakistan. we have submitted our applications, waiting to hear from them....fingers crossed.

its quite a journey getting the visas itself......but exciting when you come out with the stamp!

we recieved the 'carnet de passages' for our car today. which basically is a passport for our car, allowing us to take it into all the countries we need to cross. but it also means that our car is British, and should return to UK within a year! so after our journey, we will be shipping our car back from India, to get a refund on the deposit which we had to pay for the 'carnet...'. by the next week we should also have obtained IDP's (international driving permits) for both of us.

next on our list of things to do, is getting our car ready for its big holiday! we are planning to get winter tyres, which are a must for driving through Norwegian Fjords and the arctic circle.

as we are planning to camp in most of europe, we are also getting geared up to face any adverse weather conditions.

phew! thats quite a lot to do even before we set off. will keep you posted.

Justin &
